Brief Description:  Nose landing gear assembly

Worked on the nose strut assembly. The fork on the strut was missing a 3/8" hole for the axle. I assembled the tire with bushings, centered the OD of the tire in the fork using some shims, and used a long 3/8" transfer punch to mark a hole for drilling. Removed the tire assembly and used a 12" long 1/8" bit to drill through the existing fork hole for a pilot hole on the opposite side. Then updrilled the hole to 3/8" from the outside of the fork.

The bushings would not slide onto the strut over the powder coating. The plan indicates to remove just a small area of coating where the bushings slide. The drawing shows this in the wrong place and does not allow for bushing movement when the strut compresses. I used Klean-Strip Low Odor Aircraft Remover to strip the coating to within a couple of inches of the spring bottom flange. It only took about 10 minutes for the coating to bubble up and be easily removed with steel wool.

The bushings were still a tight fit so I used a 1" ScotchBrite drum to hone out their centers until they slid onto the strut.

I have not drilled/installed the L02-13 drive horn bolt until I find out if there should be some pre-compression of the spring, or how much compression there will be with engine installed and loaded with pilot, fuel, etc. If there is any slop there when loaded, it may "thump" back down when the wheel lifts off or while taxing over bumps.
